“ Education is not the learning of the facts. It is the training of the mind.” – Albert Einstein

Sheila Hyer is a seasoned High School English Teacher who has successfully taught students between the ages of six and sixty. Her content area has breadth- she excels at both teaching basic grammar as well as teaching students how to develop sophisticated analytical writing skills. She has helped hundreds of students improve their performance on standardized tests such as the SAT and Regents exams. While Sheila believes effective teachers must have intellectual breadth, they must also employ instructional depth. As such, she uses specific diagnostic assessments, sound differentiated instruction, and thorough lesson planning with every student. Her ultimate goal is to guide students to become more critical and independent thinkers. Sheila believes real student growth requires students to first identify their difficulties and to then determine the proper tools to address them. She is a Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Suny Binghamton with her Master in English Education.

Shelia worked with my son to prepare him for the College SAT Essay test.  The goal of his tutoring session was to come away with a thorough understanding of the format of the test, to learn how best to structure his essay and the key points he should address in his writing, and gain time management advice.  All of his goals were met by his tutoring with Shelia and he felt well prepared for the essay portion of the exam.  We highly recommend Shelia.   R.B.

Working with Sheila was an amazing experience.  She was able to quickly understand me as a writer and identify my strengths and weaknesses.  She helped me prepare for the essay section of the SAT by teaching me how to format it and accomplish the given task.  Sheila read some of my practice essays and was able to pick out reoccurring errors within my writing.  She then effectively instructed me on how to address these problems so I could write a solid essay.  I felt very confident going into the test, and I am confident that I did well all thanks to Sheila.  Hugh Smith

I can not thank Sheila enough. My son, a high school senior at Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons high school in Schenectady, who just walked across the graduation stage, needed to take and pass his English Regents Comprehensive Exam to meet graduation requirements. I contacted Sheila two weeks prior to the exam, she promptly responded to my request, and scheduled to spend two hours with my son at the local library. Impressively, she made contact with his HS guidance counselor to learn his prior scores and weaknesses so she'd know the areas to focus on with him to strengthen his skills. She was very diligent, caring and patient in guiding him through the central areas of the exam.  More so, she followed-up that evening with additional points and gave him homework to increase his comfortability and familiarity with the test. Needless to say, my son passed his exam and is now off to college. I am forever grateful for her, her expertise and immediate response time. Thank you! I recommend her without any reservations.  Shari W. Quinn

In only one session working with Sheila Hyer on the writing portion of the SAT, my daughter saw a significant improvement in her score.  She has a great deal of information to offer and she gave my daughter valuable handouts that she used to review right before taking the test.  I would highly recommend Sheila if you are looking for an SAT tutor! My son Michael was struggling with English in his last quarter. He did not understand Macbeth; I could see he needed help. His writing also had major problems and lacked details. I was given Sheila Hyer as a tutor. I called and spoke to her, and she immediately fit Michael into her schedule. He connected with Sheila because he said she explained  things differently, more clearly. She showed him writing skills and other strategies for the Regents. He actually enjoyed meeting with her and became more confident. Michael went from failing the Regents to earning an 81%. I am so happy she was able to help him in such a short amount of time. I appreciate Sheila and will be keeping her contact information for future reference.

Sheila has been an effective and engaging tutor for my non- academically oriented daughter.  I see the difference in her marks and am confident that she will do better on the SATs.  I highly recommend Sheila.  The service is reasonable and flexible.  I am very satisfied.     S.C.

Sheila’s knowledge and dedication to our daughter got her through junior year English AP Prep.  She struggled with a teacher who didn’t provide much direction on some very difficult assignments, and Sheila was willing to put in time both preparing for the tutoring sessions as well as time with our daughter to help her put her best effort into each assignment.  Sheila also prepared her for the English sections of the ACT exam.  Not only did our daughter’s English skills improve, but she developed confidence in her ability. We are very grateful for all of Sheila’s help.

Sheila worked with Brian for two hours a week for the six weeks leading up to his next SAT. The change in Brian during that time was amazing. He came home excited because he finally had an understanding he didn't have before. He actually looked forward to the tutoring sessions. Sheila made him feel confident and smart. He has not always been the most engaged student and her patient teaching style kept him engaged. The tools she gave him, primarily grammar rules,  made him want to do the work between sessions so he would retain the information and continue to learn. He went into that SAT with much greater confidence. So far so good and then we had to wait for the results.
At this point I was just happy that his approach to this exam was so positive. Knowing how hard it is to move those numbers on the SAT I was hopeful but cautious. Brian needed them to move, not only for college acceptance, but his self-esteem as well. We anxiously pulled up his results on-line and were blown away by the fact that his reading went up 70 points and his writing went up 60 points. This was a huge increase and we were thrilled. The combination of Sheila's knowledge and teaching style did that for Brian.  E.R.

Sheila was enthuastic and positive. She approached her tutoring in a firm, no nonsense yet personable way. My daughter enjoyed her time with Sheila and learned how to critically access her work. My daughter improved her regents english grade by 21% after just 5 sessions working with Sheila. Thanks so much to Sheila and D&T Tutoring.  J.B.

Sheila did an amazing job at challenging Connor and getting him to better understand the concepts and how to apply them in his writing! He passed with 29 points more than his original score. Connor said Sheila was always very positive and encouraging and we thank her for that! We are using her to assist Connor with 4 more session towards bettering his score on the SAT  K.R.

Sheila went above and beyond in tutoring my son for SAT/ACT prep as well as critiquing his college essay. His ACT scores went from a 28 to a 32 and the reading section increased by 7 points. She was thorough, professional and most importantly, engaging. Would highly recommend!!!  S.H.

Sheila Hyer helped and walked me through a very difficult and challenging writing assignment. Her style & skills were precise and accurate. She was always encouraging and supportive. I highly recommend her as a tutor!

Thank you Sheila Hyer for all your help, patience, writing and vocabulary knowledge, and research skills.  I received an A in my Developmental Psychology course and I could not have done it without your guidance and support!

My son has dyslexia and has struggled with English since grade school. His main objective was to raise his ACT English Score. Sheila was genuinely concerned and interested in my son's progress. She was able to identify my son's shortcomings and his ACT English score went up 7 points, from a 22 to a 29 - better than we could have imagined. I would highly recommend her.
